Pullman & Comley Energy and Utilities attorneys Frederic Lee Klein and Liana Feinn wrote an article for the New England Real Estate Journal (NEREJ), discussing the shifting energy landscape in New England and its implications for future developments. Historically, the region’s power system peaked during the summer due to air conditioning demand, but by the mid-2030s, winter demand is expected to surpass summer, driven by the electrification of heating systems. According to the article, "ISO’s recent Transmission Study forecast a possible winter peak of 57,000 MW in 2050 – almost triple today’s winter peak."

Fred and Liana explain that meeting these growing energy needs—especially as fossil fuel plants are phased out—will require a substantial increase in renewable energy sources, battery storage, and energy imports. They highlight recent legislative changes in Connecticut that offer new opportunities for developers, with extended support for renewable energy projects and initiatives to encourage cleaner energy sourcing.
